Mr. Yannis Stournaras took over the economy about 18 months ago. Prior to that we had the double elections in May and June of 2012, the parties were shaken and the leaders of the tripartite coalition government were seeking someone reliable and mutually accepted, who would be able to take over the Ministry of Finances and to “run” the program of structural changes that had been agreed upon with our partners and lenders.
Mr. Stournaras was not the first choice. Originally the three leaders chose Mr. V. Rapanos, but due to health problems he was unable to perform his duties. That is where Mr. Stournaras came in, who dynamically took over the post and quickly moved forward.
Mr. Stournaras became Minister of Finances at a hard time, when the people abroad demanded immediate action and the Greek people were in despair, uncertain of the future. Truth be told, he did not hesitate to take some difficult decisions and come to blows with partisan and other interest groups.
Regardless as to whether one agrees or not with him, he was honest and directly defended his choices, for which he was hated, but it must also be noted that he achieved results.
Mr. Stournaras improved public finances and the country’s position to negotiate with our lenders and partners, by bring a new balance to the Greek economy, at a huge social cost.
At present the Greek government – any Greek government – has the arguments and tools to support its position better than it could before. And that is the result, to a great extent, of Mr. Stournaras’ consistent and huge efforts.
However, during these 18 or so months, the Minister of Finances practically became a hated figure. In public opinion he is associated with taxes and charges. In the present financial and social conditions, that is unavoidable for a Minister of Finances. In that respect, Mr. Stournaras’ journey at the Ministry of Finances has come to an end.
Irrespective of what face and politics has in store for him, his tenure at the Ministry of Finances is coming to an end. In the next two or three months, when the negotiations with the troika are compete, he will honorably and valiantly depart. Quite simply we have entered a new period and the politics demand that other people take over, who are closer to the parties and leaders and who are closer to society and accepted by the people.
After all, during the present crisis, it has almost become a tradition for the tenure at the Ministry of Finances to last about 18 months. IN any case, Mr. Stournaras managed to undertake and complete the hardest job of recent years. Along with the people’s anger, he deserves praise for his consistency and efficiency…
